Seikyusha was established in an area next to the industrial area of southern
Kawasaki where many Koreans live. Koreans and Japanese from this area are
working together to move ahead with a citizens’ movement and local activities
to do away with ethnic discrimination. Ethnic discrimination clearly appears
against children as they are brought up, young children who are in no position
to fight back. Therefore, Sakuramoto Nursery School was founded to take
action together with the children against this discrimination. Then, the
citizens’ movement to do away with ethnic discrimination demanded a partnership
with the administration, and the Fureai Kan (Contact Building) opened in
1988 as a result of long negotiations. The citizens’ movement continued
to carry on with work facing new life issues including day care, the Jido
Kan (Children’s Building), social education, and welfare of the aged and
disabled. The Seikyusha Network, a network standing alongside the citizens
and looking out from their perspective, was created to carry out a wide
range of projects. |
